Carrying capacity is strictly defined as long term sustainability, and therefore is degrading by the time of its intersection with rising population, if not before. Loss of carrying capacity happens before reaching peak population. Various long term renewable resources have total reserves of stock which take time to diminish, such as soil, forests, aquifers and ocean chemical buffer capacity. The system feedbacks from this degradation do not impact the reproduction growth rate of overshooting population until it is far too late.
