Politicians always pull the leavers of systems control in the wrong direction. However since the human systems overgrowth are themselves the cause of our problems, applying our only money system brakes we have is perhaps the very least they can do. The pain and suffering in the big growth limits and biosphere crash is already hard, with much more horror to be experienced. Time to form groups banding together that may survive without inputs from globalised civilisation.
