The forseeable long term future is already grim. All that farmland Mr. Gates is said to be buying up. Money buys the best delusions. No good without tenants able to do sustainable agriculture without using all the once upon a time, of fossil fuel energy, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Pliable peasants require guarentees of protection, in a feudal society. Protecting soils, will be difficult, during times of hunger. Peasants have to feed themselves first. Meanwhile climate temperatures, droughts, fires, floods continue to rachet up as global warming rises to extremes, still rising fast 50-100 years in the future, plus multiple warming feedbacks, ice and permafrost melt, forests burn, biosphere die back, ocean and soil chemistry collapse. Retreat towards the poles. Maybe some new arable land in northern high latitidues. Supportable population density will fall as clean water scarcity rises. Fossil water use is also going to collapse. The concept of land ownership breaks down , the legal notion private property dies after the destruction of society, and destruction of ecosystems and agriculture by climate. Back to a sparse feudalism, and after that, tribalism, with the emphasis on feuding conflicts.
