The value of MMT is it demonstrates how money is a human signalling abstraction wielded by the powerful in a our physical and biological real world systems. Literally power is socially agreed ownership of large amounts of money. Only the real stuff is not going very well, and so we look at our money systems and think, what is the big problem? It has to be both worlds. In our use of money signals, like no real carbon price, reliance on free markets, and trust in the irrational intentions of human beings as if they were fully rational. Like the abstract number line , most of the human mental space is irrational, and cannot be trusted with precision. MMT and its older versions create breakage of rules for ecological carrying capacity and destructive human behaviours, to override invisible systems limits. We never knew how to say collective “No” to extreme growth in collective consumption. We are biologically wired to grow beyond our systems ends. MMT is incomplete and unsatisfactory without ecological grounding and growth limitations, and so are all our money systems. Money gives most value to the most nature destructive technologies and energy sources. How modern is that?
